Founded in 1877, Broomfield began as a small farming community known as Zang's Spur. The city was named after A.J. Zang, founder of the Zang Brewing Company, located near the present day intersection of 120th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard. In the early 1900s, the city was renamed Broomfield after all the broomcorn grown in the area.

During the 1950s, Broomfield began to develop as a bedroom community for Denver. The city was officially incorporated in 1961 and adopted its first master plan in 1974. The city continues to revise its master plan now that it has become its own county, the first to be added to the state in nearly 100 years! Broomfield City Planners have received rave reviews from local critics who have analyzed their city plan over the next 10 years.
